Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

This week the Swiss health authorities said they would not allow the country’s main drug to be sold in the European Union.
The ban, which will take effect in the summer, has been welcomed by some EU countries. It will be an early step in the fight to protect the health of millions of people.
The European Medicines Agency (EMEA), which has received a lot of criticism over the ban, has been trying to find out the real reasons for the ban.
“The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is working with the public, the public-sector, and the private sector to ensure that the ban is not justifiable,” said the EMA head, Dr. Günter Baum.
The EMEA said it believed that the ban was the result of a “medical breakthrough” for the country.
The ban had already been made in the United States.
The European Commission has been trying to find a solution to the problem of “unacceptable” and “unwanted” drug use in the European Union.
“We are committed to a strong and responsible European medical policy, including a strong and responsible regulatory environment in the Member States,” said the commission’s head, Mr. Jenswinder Börkner.
The commission has also been trying to find a way to help the country’s patients who have the most to lose from drug use.
The commission hopes that it will be able to make a simple, short-form summary of the ban on Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Spedra, which are widely used in Europe. It will then take the country’s public health system into account to ensure that there are no problems with the use of the drugs.
The EMA has also heard from the German health authorities, who are investigating the use of the drug in Germany.
The commission also hopes that the EU will help to stop any more drugs being sold in Germany, such as Cialis, which are widely used.
The EMA is also working with Germany’s health authorities to make sure that the country’s treatment of men’s sexual problems and HIV and syphilis are not affected by the ban.
The German health authorities are not aware of any data which shows the ban is affecting men who take the drug.
But the commission hopes that the ban will be a good step towards preventing other drug use.
“In the EU, men’s sexual health is a public health issue, and we believe that it is more important than ever to provide treatment,” said the commission’s head, Dr. Jan Schubert.
The EMA has also been working with the German public health authorities, who are also investigating the use of Viagra and Cialis.

Cialis is a generic form of the well known drug Viagra, which is prescribed to men for erectile dysfunction. It contains the active ingredient tadalafil. Tadalafil is a PDE5 inhibitor that works to widen blood vessels and increase blood flow to the penis. Tadalafil works by increasing the amount of cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate) in the body. This process helps in the maintenance of erections for up to 36 hours. The medication will only work for men with certain medical conditions such as diabetes or heart failure. It will not work for other types of erectile dysfunction. Cialis is known for its ability to treat erectile dysfunction, although not all people respond well to it. Cialis has been on the market since 1998.
While Cialis is generally safe to use, some people may experience side effects from the drug. The most common side effects of Cialis include:

Specifically, you should inform your health care provider of any alpha-blocker, antifungal, HIV protease inhibitor, or high blood pressure medication you are taking. Remember to mention any herbal products you use, especially St. John’s wort.
